Our season started with record breaking pre-season bookings, and from talking to others,  both small independents and large tour operators it appears everyone was in the same boat,  so with the arrival of the first real snowfalls at the end of November / beginning of December everyone,  including us felt extremely optimistic about the impending season.

The snow didn`t disappoint, but the sunny days did or lack of them ( I  am such a fair weather rider).  Although no way did I want a repeat of winter 2010 where we had beautiful blue skies in abundance but no snow, so beggars cant be choosers and if snow meant cloudy days so be it, the pistes were in great condition, the off piste was amazing and by January our snow base was an incredible 151cm with 81cm at resort level.

As February fast approached, so did the school holidays, not just the British,  which this year were spanning two weeks from 8th Feb – 25th Feb,  but also the rest of Europe including the *French holidays that traditionally cover the 4 weeks of February, this year ran from 10th Feb and ended 17th Mar ! .  No worries of snow issues or lack of it as the average base during February was 206cm at the top and a cracking 128cm at lower levels.

March saw more snow, the continuation of the French holidays and then straight into the start of Easter holidays.  With the snow still falling our base was a whopping 225cm at the top and 145cm at the bottom, perfect conditions for the British Nationals that fall at the end of March beginning of April.  Sunny days were few and far between which I believe had an impact on last minute March bookings.  March is a month that generally doesn`t book up pre season, the snow in march can be unpredictable for the hardcore skiers who want powder, from experience it tends to be  the month that we find many people enjoying their 2nd ski trip of the winter grabbing a last minute deal, or skiers that prefer sunnier skiing and not the cold of January skiing,  a quieter time on the piste after the madness of February and just before the last of the holidays with Easter crowds.

As mentioned March is supposed to be the sunnier skiing month, the skies are blue and the sun is warm enough to enjoy après on the terrace of the Ronnie, live music outside, dancing on tables, and a chance to grab a pre summer tan (ok just on the arms and face, but a bit of colour makes anyone feel happier) , but this year that wasn`t to be, the cold snap that hit the UK also hit the alps, again great for snow fall but not for the blue skies and this I believe had an impact on the March and Easter last min bookings, if it`s grey and miserable at home you are not going to head off to a ski resort which isn`t much brighter, travel agents reported a 50% increase on last min sun on the previous year  for the same period.

As I mentioned Earlier, 2013 was an endless winter, or so it felt, by mid April the snow  bases were still 243cm at the top and a wonderful 100cm at the bottom, ensuring that skiers could easily ski all the way back to resort with seeing rocks and patches.  Temperatures remained low and for the lucky people who risked a last min April deal and us lucky enough to live / spend a season out here the snow was impeccable  and a fantastic end to the season.

So that was 2013 in 800 words or so, but it wasn`t just about the snow, so much more happened in one of the worlds best resort,  including

So thank you snow gods for an epic winter, and here is to a summer of sun & fun and WINTER 2014 ! ! !

* The French holiday system –  France is divided into 3 Zones and each zone in February has 2 weeks vacation, this is called the Winter Holidays.  These weeks are staggered and at any one time you may find 2 zones on vacation during a week of Winter holidays.  Great in one way as it means that on holiday you are not contending with the whole of France but on the flip side the holiday then feel like they are lasting an age !

Over the past couple of weeks we have been receiving more and more enquiries for next winter, so I have been focusing on next years prices, offers, and packages. This is to  ensure that we are constantly striving to offer the best service at the best rate,  I  have spent a lot of time checking out what others do, and especially the larger tour operators in the mid-market area, our biggest competitor.  From this research I was shocked to see supplements that can add over £100pp to the base price of your holiday.

Having worked in the ski industry and tourism industry for over 10 years I still don`t fully understand the whole additional supplements, so I have decided to write down in black and white a few of the most common ones to try and understand more and give an insight to people who may not understand either.

ROOM SUPPLEMENTS

First up,  room supplements, ok so some are easy to understand, for example, the chalet has 4 rooms, 2 rooms have an en-suite Shower & WC, 1 room has and ensuite bath & WC, and 1 room doesn`t have an en-suite.  You book a room in this chalet, and all 4 rooms are free and you want the best room, say with bath & WC so the company start with a base price then you pay for what is in effect an upgrade, like you would in a hotel.  Now,  you are a group of 8 looking to take the whole chalet, you all know what you are getting so why  add the supplements, this was the one that would confuse me and confuse clients when I worked in ski sales.  I do understand that someone in the party will get the Bath & wc , some shower & wc and 2 people will end up without an en-suite, but they will all fight it out between themselves.  Surely on sole occupancy the operator should just charge the base rate X 8, I always thought of this supplement as an unfair one really, just out there for extra revenue.

FLIGHT SUPPLEMENTS 

Next up is the flight supplements, now this is easy, the supplements are based on the airport taxes, all flights start at the same base price then different airports will have higher tax rates and charges.  BUT this isn`t just the case, for example, you have 2 flights departing Manchester to Geneva, one flight leaves at 6.45am and the other leaves at 11.30am.  the 11.30 would probably be the most popular as it is at a reasonable hour and probably preferred so the supplement on that will be higher to try and persuade people to book the earlier flight with a cheaper supplement.

SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS 

A supplement that tends to annoy single travellers is the Single Person Supplement, now this I do understand, if the traveller is taking a room that sleeps 2 or more, the spare bed could be sold and the Chalet  / tour company, thus  potentially missing out on another paying guest.  Single supplements vary greatly between company to company, some charge a flat rate like us of £200pp (off peak dates) £250 (mid peak dates) and no discount at peak dates,  others however charge upto 75% of the standard rate low & mid season dates and like us 100% during peak dates.  As mentioned this is when taking a room designed to sleep more than one person.  The charge I don`t understand is when the supplement for a single traveller is added when taking a single room, this doesn`t happen very often anymore, although I remember in 2003 working for an operator who would charge the supplement for a single traveller in a single room (sometimes though you may not be charged an actual supplement but the single room can be more expensive) .  When I questioned the Resort Manager, after being questioned myself I was told that the supplement covered the service that the guest received as the room would still be serviced by 2 chalet hosts, and at dinner te guest would still be served by 2 chalet hosts ? ? WHAT? even now writing this down in black and white is makes zero sense, but that was how it was and very occasionally how it is now.

DIETARY SUPPLEMENT ? this is a new one ! 

And here is the new supplement I discovered ! ……… The dietary requirement supplement, yes you read that right, if you are a meat eater, or a normal vegetarian then you are not charged a supplement, but what if you have a dairy intolerance, or a are a celiac, have a gluten intolerance, or you are a vegan ? Well you can add £35 to the cost of your holiday.  £35 appears to be penalising guests for what could be a medical condition.  I would understand this supplement if it was to cost more to buy in extra food of special foods, but it doesn`t, in fact if you are gluten free, dairy free or vegan the cost per head could work out less, Gluten free  won`t eat the cakes or bread, dairy free won`t eat your cheese board, milk, yogurts etc, and vegans ? well they won`t eat meat, and dairy products, so therefore saving on the chalet budget.   And  the extra charge isn`t for the extra work the chalet staff may have to do in cooking more than one meal, as that £35 will not be passed on in extra wages ! plus if the chalet chef cannot cope with more than one variation of a meal then he / she should not be working in a chalet cooking your meals.

Aktivexperience don`t charge for room supplements and we certainly do not charge a dietary requirement supplement , but as mentioned I do understand why some supplements are charged, it`s not just about getting more revenue , there are extra charges placed in resort and by external companies such as airports & airlines.

One thing that I did realise is that if you want to pay the price you first see, the base price with no supplements, smaller independents are the way forward, plus if there are any extras their websites are a lot easier to navigate and understand, plus as many do not include flights you can save on flight supplements by booking your own from your own regional airport at a time that best suits your needs.

The Bristish Championships! 

“The British National Alpine Ski Championships is one of the most important dates on the British ski calendar, and provides many of the country’s younger racers with their first opportunity to compete on snow against a top class field.”

So first things first, FIS Womens DH & SC.  What a weekend that was, one that has got me really excited for 2015 when Meribel will host the World Cup Finals !  All last week the resort was a buzz of activity, make-shift buildings for VIP`s, competitors and Press were popping up at the Chaudanne, the course was being finalised and the competitors all practising.   On Friday the local school, that Lil`Aktiv attends were invited to see what all the fuss was about and meet some of the ladies including Mariond Rolland !

Saturday was perfect conditions for the Ladies downhill and many people were there to support accompanied by what can only be described as a carnival atmosphere.

With  slight change in the weather during Saturday night (IT DUMPED DOWN) Sunday was slightly delayed due to the officials deciding whether the course and flat light were safe, but considering the ski instructors who were doing “community service” had been stomping the course all Saturday night under the floodlights, there wasn`t much doubt the SC wasn`t going to go ahead.

So what`s on this week, the kids are back to school, March has hit and Spring is in the air, which means the lifts are open slightly longer and the après is getting warmer and sunnier !

Ok so we are not really a sleepy little town and we are pretty geared up for 1000`s & 1000`s of people, but it still comes as a shock when suddenly your daily routine will take that little bit longer and this year it has been made all the more longer with the FIS Women’s World Cup being hosted the same week as the French, Dutch Belgium’s, Italians and the majority of the UK are on holiday !

So what is happening this week in and around Meribel?

First up has to be the FIS Coupe De Monde Ladies Downhill and Super G, the races will take place Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February, and meribel will welcome the best ladies in Alpine downhill and super G in the world to compete on our glorious mountains.

The course that the ladies will race on has been under construction since last summer, To do this, Méribel has undertaken a series of works to accommodate in the best conditions these two tests. As Courchevel, Meribel has visited (Wednesday 29 August) the Security Commission to confirm the final details regarding the safety of this track Corbey. Present among others, Jan Tischhauser (Head FIS World Cup races speed Dames), Fabien Saguez (DTN FFS), Jo Galinier (Race Director for the World Cup in Meribel – FFS) and Christophe Mugnier (Director Organizing Committee – Méribel Tourisme).

The latest work was on the top of the stage with the installation of a tunnel about 52 feet long, held on 11 & 12 September. This will let the flow of skiers during the World Cup events will be held over.

The course:
- Name of the track: “Descent of the Roc de Fer”
- Orientation: upper: East, middle: North East, final: East
- Check “Under the Petit Col”, altitude 2150 m
- Arrival: Chaudanne Plateau, altitude 1432 m
- Elevation: 718 meters
- Length: 2355 meters
- Slope: Maximum slope: 58% minimum slope: 7% average slope: 30%
- The track is accessible by two lifts on the bottom: chairlift Rights Plan (flow rate: 2 500 pers / h) and chairlift Roc de Fer (1500 person / h) and the start of the descent of the Olympic Express chairlift (1500 person / h)
- Ahead of the start of the Super G, a tunnel of 50 m allows safe movement of tourists and spectators
- Teeing: “Under the Petit Col”, 200 m to the north and downstream of the arrival of the Olympic Express chairlift
- Finish area = unique situation: Plateau Chaudanne.

Next week I will update you further on the chaos and fun that is involved in hosting the World Cup, 2013 is the warm up to the World Cup Finals in 2015 which is was awarded a couple of years back ! A massive achievement for our resort and a great platform for Meribel to show just what it is capable of.

With it being half term, many bars and nightclubs will feel that little bit quieter this week, but there is still plenty to entertain the slightly reduced masses.

March Madness, with so much snow around, March is shaping up to be one barmy great month, quietness after the february rush and a masive 280m so far snow depth ! Bring on the Sunshine for less.

To many working a ski season is an amazing opportunity and so to many, what is there to get down about?  Seasonaires live in amazing surroundings, you get to ski every day, party like you will never party again, and be at the beck and call to lovely guests, what more could a person ask for?

The above statements may be true, but throw into that mix the fact you have not seen your family and best friends, boyfriends or girlfriends for 3 months, you have lived & worked in the same place for 3 months and if you know no-one with transport you will not have left that “pretty village” for 3 months, and  the fact you live with up to 10 people in staff accommodation who believe hygiene means washing up dishes at the end of the season and changing their pants & socks  once a week , that idyllic life soon turns into a claustrophobic hell (ok so hell is a little harsh, but it isn`t nice)

By the time February hits many people have got passed the polite smiles,  and the boiling anger that has been building due to guests who have not been very nice, the dirty dishes smelling in the sink of your staff accomm and more,  suddenly comes to the surface, and even skiing / snowboarding everyday cannot suppress the urge to “BREAK FREE” , the weekly skype chat , and regular facebook status updates from friends back home reminds people of what they could be or think they are missing, soon the heart starts to miss a regular life and your liver screams STOP! no more.

This kind of sums up mid-season blues, the frustration of feeling helpless  and this is when fight or flight kicks in, many will choose flight, hand in their notice and go home (after 2 weeks at home regret sets in and then  wish they hadn`t quit) but those who Fight get through the blues, it does take a couple of weeks, which generally include the peak dates of February half term, and anyone who can survive February will make the end of the season.

So how do you conquer this low ebb, motivate yourself to get through the madness and see in spring and the fun times ahead?  The answer …… get yourself out, enjoy some of what Meribel has to offer over the coming days, weeks, and months.

British Forces International Ski Championships

The British Armed Forces Championships unite the RAF, Royal Navy and Army in an international event on Méribel’s slopes.

Skiers take part in downhill, Super GS, Slalom and GS; snowboarders in Slopestyle and snowboardcross, and telemarkers in parallel slalom, GS and sprint.

Next week is looking a little grey to say the least, but it is showing signs of snow and it could be chilly! thankfully no rain is showing, as no one like to see rain in the winter, and after last nights down pour with a snow / rain limit of 1700m we certainly don`t want anymore until April !

A great success and plans for the 2014 tournament are already underway

Now I must admit most of my Friday round-ups generally consist of going out news, but this week I thought I would give a little insight into events that are happening for not just night owls.   First up has to be  the FIS World Cup Ladies downhill taking place 23rd & 24th February 2013.

 In order to host these two events in the best possible conditions, work has been carried out to prepare the piste accordingly, The last of the work took place on the 11th and 12th September on higher part of the race piste with the installation of a 52m tunnel. This tunnel will allow skiers to cross under the piste without disrupting any of the races taking place.

29th & 30th January , In Celebration of 20 years partnership between Méribel riderLudovic Strohl and the French brand Oxbow. A one-off gathering in Méribel of snowboard legends (Jean Nerva, Serge Vitelli), extreme skiers (Bruno Compagnet, Yann André) and their successors (Mathieu Crépel, Thomas Delfino, Jérémy Prévost ).

Hockey 

Local team val Vanoise will be heading to Compiègne this weekend to keep up their winning streak, Vanoise are currently standing 3rd in the league, “allez les bouquetins”

Six nations

Winter, not only is a time to enjoy the on piste actions, as February and the crowds draw ever closer so does the 6 nations, a highlight in the Aktiv calendar ! All games are to be shown in Jacks bar with added happy hour jugs of beer from kick off !

Last week was a fun filled week in resort which included funny men Marcus Brigstocke, Andrew O`Neil and Abandoman (we love abandoman even when they do get you up on stage! ) after which I though it was about time I tried out dicks T-Bar, all in the name of research and a spot of Après.

I can confirm that après is still as much fun as it always is and thanks to La tavernes jeager bomb deals it was more of a stumble home rather than a walk home

France 3, national television has hit Meribel this week and set up shop at the Chaudanne and in mottaret they are filming the french version of Total Wipeout ! this appears to be the build up to the FIS World Cup Ladies Downhill hosted in Meribel in February !

Poker…. Poker …. Poker….

For some reason there seems to be a connection between seasonaires, ski resorts and a love of poker, and it appears  Meribel has noticed this, so next week sees a week long poker competition with the winner being entered into the WPT series !

Yes i have entered, no i won`t do well but it will be an experience and lets hope I get passed day 1.

Taking The Piste

We hope 2013 is a special one for all.

For a bit of after dark partying the resort has so much to offer that you could well be spoilt for choice, for those that are after a little bit of a more chilled vibe, Evolution is the place to head, this week includes Daisy B`s Sunday Club, Hobo Chic and for budding singers Open Mike Night

The Den will be hosting live Music and check out their facebook page for regular drinks promos including 241 drinks and food deals !

For revellers who prefer to end their night the following morning then Dicks T-bar  will keep you dancing till the early hours.

Wednesday will see local Meribel play at the Patinoire in Meribel, cost is generally around €5 per person and children under 5 go free.  Our local “big” league team Val Vaoise are again away this coming week but will be back at home on the 19th January again Evry

Ever fancied sitting in the cockpit of a piste basher and experiencing grooming the pistes? pop along to the Mottaret tourist office and sign up for a ride, cost is €5 per person and they leave around 6pm .
